Which McTog Style Is Right for My Dog? A Guide to Our Different Dog Coat Styles

One dog coat style won’t suit every dog.

Some dogs happily have a jumper pulled over their head, while others would much rather step into their coat. Some need additional neck or leg coverage, some wear a harness underneath their coat, and others need a little more warmth when the temperature drops.

That’s why we’ve developed several different Glenndarcy McTog dog coat styles over the years.

Although many of our designs use the same lightweight Pour Off® waterproof microfleece, the way each McTog fits and fastens can be quite different.

This guide explains the main McTog styles and should help you decide which one is likely to work best for your dog.

Pullover Waterproof McTog

Best for: dogs that are happy having a coat pulled over their head and owners looking for a simple, streamlined waterproof design.

Our Pullover McTog is probably the simplest of our waterproof dog jumper designs.

Made from our lightweight Pour Off® waterproof microfleece, it simply pulls over your dog’s head and has no row of poppers along the back.

The crossover neck can be worn higher or folded down, while the close-fitting design provides excellent chest and tummy coverage without restricting your dog’s movement.

It’s a particularly good choice for active dogs that are perfectly happy having their coat pulled over their head.

Consider another McTog style if: your dog dislikes clothing being pulled over its head or you would prefer a coat that opens more fully for dressing.

Full Poppers Step-In McTog

Best for: easy dressing, dogs that don’t like pullovers and owners wanting flexible harness access.

Our Full Poppers Step-In McTog completely opens along the back.

Your dog steps into the coat and the poppers are then fastened along the back, so there’s no need to pull the main body of the coat over your dog’s head.

Made from Pour Off® waterproof microfleece, the Full Poppers style provides excellent body, chest and tummy protection from rain, wet grass, mud and spray.

The back poppers also provide useful flexible harness access. If your dog’s harness is worn underneath the McTog, the lead can be connected through a suitable gap between the poppers rather than relying on one fixed-position harness opening.

It’s a practical choice for everyday walks and can also be particularly useful for dogs that prefer easier dressing.

High Neck Full Poppers McTog

Best for: additional waterproof neck coverage combined with easy step-in dressing.

Our High Neck Full Poppers design takes the easy-fitting concept of our Full Poppers McTog and adds additional wet-weather protection around the neck.

The Pour Off® waterproof microfleece continues right up the extended neck, with poppers running along both the back and neck.

This means the coat can open very fully for dressing, making it a particularly practical option for dogs that don’t enjoy having clothing pulled over their head, as well as older or less mobile dogs.

The High Neck design also provides excellent body, chest and tummy coverage, flexible harness access through the back poppers and reflective piping for additional visibility.

If you like the easy fitting of our Full Poppers McTog but would prefer more waterproof coverage around your dog’s neck, this is the style to consider.

Partial Back Poppers with Fleece Neck

Best for: dogs and owners wanting something between a Pullover and a Full Poppers McTog.

Our Partial Back Poppers design combines features of both styles.

Your dog’s head slips through the longer, soft microfleece neck, while the waterproof body opens along the back and fastens with poppers.

This makes it easier to put on than a full pullover while retaining the comfortable longer fleece neck.

The back poppers also provide flexible harness access for dogs wearing their harness underneath.

It’s important to note that while the body is made from our waterproof Pour Off® microfleece, the soft microfleece neck itself isn’t waterproof.

This style is a good middle ground for dogs that don’t need a coat to open completely around the neck but whose owners appreciate the convenience of a back fastening.

RainHug

Best for: generous wraparound coverage, easy Over/Under fitting and a harness worn underneath.

RainHug is a different take on the traditional McTog.

The coat slips over your dog’s head, while the lower section passes underneath the body and fastens securely over the top.

Made from Pour Off® waterproof microfleece, RainHug provides generous wet-weather coverage while remaining lightweight and comfortable.

It includes good neck and rear coverage, reflective piping for additional visibility and a covered harness access opening with poppers, allowing a lead to connect to a harness worn underneath the coat.

RainHug is initially available in sizes 35, 40 and 45 while we introduce and trial this new McTog style with our customers. We hope to expand the size range in the future depending on demand.

Double Layer Waterproof Microfleece McTog

Best for: colder and wetter conditions or dogs that benefit from additional warmth.

If you love the protection of a waterproof McTog but your dog needs something warmer, our Double Layer range is worth considering.

Rather than our standard single-layer patterned Pour Off® construction, these coats use two layers of soft microfleece with a waterproof membrane between them.

The result is a warmer waterproof McTog designed for colder, wetter walks.

Double Layer McTogs are available in different fastening styles, including Pullover, Back Poppers and Step-In Full Poppers.

One thing to bear in mind is that the Double Layer construction has less stretch than our standard single-layer Pour Off® microfleece. It’s therefore particularly important to check your dog’s measurements carefully.

If your dog falls between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size.

Waterproof McTogs with Front Leg Sleeves

Best for: dogs where additional shoulder and upper-leg coverage is useful.

Our sleeved McTogs provide additional coverage around the front legs and shoulders compared with our sleeveless designs.

Made using our waterproof microfleece, they help protect the body, chest and tummy while the front sleeves provide additional protection for dogs that enjoy wet, muddy outdoor adventures.

A comfortable crossover collar makes the McTog easy to pull on and can be worn higher around the neck or folded down.

The sleeved construction can also help the McTog stay comfortably in position while your dog is running, playing and exploring.

Polar Fleece McTog

Best for: warmth, softness and flexibility with waterproof protection underneath.

Our Polar Fleece McTogs are slightly different from our Pour Off® waterproof microfleece range.

They use a cosy, breathable Polar Fleece upper with a waterproof chest and tummy panel, combining the warmth and flexibility of fleece with practical protection where dogs frequently get wet from damp grass, mud and spray.

It’s important to understand the distinction between the two fabrics.

Ordinary Polar Fleece isn’t fully waterproof. It provides warmth and some resistance to the elements, while the waterproof underside of these McTogs helps protect your dog’s chest and tummy.

Polar Fleece also provides more stretch than our Pour Off® waterproof microfleece, making it a comfortable and flexible choice for many dogs.

Which McTog should I choose?

If you’re still undecided, here’s a quick way to narrow down the choices.

Don’t forget about fit

Whichever McTog style you choose, getting the fit right is just as important as choosing the design.

Dogs of the same breed or weight can have surprisingly different proportions, so we always recommend measuring your dog rather than choosing a size based on breed alone.

Our McTogs are available in a wide range of sizes, including Slim and Deep fits, helping accommodate dogs with different body lengths, chest depths and proportions.

If your dog falls between two sizes, we generally recommend choosing the larger size.

Waterproof doesn’t have to mean bulky

Ultimately, choosing the right dog coat comes down to your individual dog.

Think about how they prefer to get dressed, how much warmth they need, where their harness sits, how much coverage you want and the kind of weather and terrain you normally encounter together.

A waterproof dog coat doesn’t need to be heavy or restrictive. Our aim with McTogs has always been to provide practical protection from wet weather while allowing dogs to run, play, explore and simply enjoy being dogs.
